Naoyuki Iwashita
Professor, Kyoto University
Mr. Naoyuki Iwashita has played a pivotal role in advancing the application of information security technology in the financial sector. He dedicated 33 years to the Bank of Japan, holding various leadership roles, particularly in the FinTech domain during the last decade of his tenure.
At the Bank of Japan, he served as Head of the Center for Information Technology Studies (CITECS) at the Institute for Monetary and Economic Studies (2006-2009) and General Manager of the Shimonoseki Branch (2009-2011). From 2011 to 2013, he was seconded to the Information & Telecommunication Systems Company at Hitachi, Ltd. Upon returning to the bank, he assumed roles such as Associate Director-General of the Payment & Settlement Systems Department (2013-2014), Head of the Center for Advanced Financial Technology and Deputy Director-General of the Financial System & Bank Examination Department (2014-2016). He was subsequently appointed as the inaugural Head of the FinTech Center (2016-2017).
After retiring from the Bank of Japan in March 2017, he became a professor at Kyoto University, where he teaches monetary economics and FinTech in the graduate program for public policy studies.
In addition to his academic work, he has served as an Advisor in the field of crypto-assets at the Financial Services Agency (FSA). He is also a member of the Financial System Council (since January 2019) and served as a member of the Council for Regulatory Reform at the Cabinet Office (October 2019 to June 2023).
His contributions extend to the private sector, where he has held several prominent positions:
- Special Advisor at PwC Aarata LLC (June 2017 to June 2019)
- Advisory Board Member of NTT Data Corporation (February 2019 to February 2022)
- Advisor and Advisory Board Member of Iyo Bank, Ltd. (since March 2020)
- Auditor of SBI Sumishin Net Bank, Ltd. (since January 2021)
- Outside Director of Nissay Asset Management Corporation (since June 2024)
He graduated from Keio University in March 1984.
